Crimson Chain Productions, a Maryland based film & video production company, brings you CHAINSAWLINUX - a Linux distribution designed solely for video editing, CGI, & 3D animation.

CHAINSAWLINUX, brought to you by Crimson Chain Productions, is an Operating System and a movie editing suite, a CGI & 3D animation suite, an audio editing suite, as well as so much more, all wrapped into one nice package. The developers of CHAINSAWLINUX, a film & video production company located in Maryland, are proud to offer an alternative choice to other packages. Since we are also filmmakers, we understand the things that filmmakers want. On top of that, everything inside is open source, which means you have access to the source code of the software so that you can edit, fix, upgrade, or otherwise manipulate the software to do as you wish. Your options are limitless!

Hardware is very important in an editing system - it's like the days of the old muscle cars - the bigger the engine, the faster your car. CHAINSAWLINUX runs on the x86 32 & 64-bit architectures (basically, it runs on PC's). The PC should be fairly fast - a bare minumum of a 1Ghz Processor with at least 512Mb of RAM and at least 50Gb of hard drive space would be preferred. A striped RAID system is highly recommended for importing and exporting video, but you may be able to get by with less (performance varies from system to system).

For Cinelerra, it is recommended to have at least a Dual 2.4Ghz Opteron, 4GB RAM, 200 GB storage for movie files and a Gigabit ethernet. The Renderfarm node should consist of at least a Single 2.4Ghz Athlon, 512MB RAM, Flash hard drive and a 100MB ethernet.

We understand not everyone can always afford decent editing hardware, but it's what we recommend as a bare minimum. It boils down to this: the faster your machine, the less waiting around on editing...

A copy of Final Cut Studio costs $1299 US retail (and not to mention MAC OS X costs $129). Microsoft's Windows costs, on average, over $100, while Avid sells Avid Xpress DV for $695.00, and a copy of Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 is estimated to retail for around $1800 or more. Now you don't have to go out and buy superexpensive software to do your film and video editing, you get it all in the very affordable CHAINSAWLINUX. Even more than that - you can now afford to link several machines together and have a supercomputer capable of editing even the biggest of blockbuster movies!. Because of CHAINSAWLINUX, you can afford to spend more money on much needed hardware!

Now, you may say to yourself, "Wait a minute. I've heard that Linux is hard to use - way harder than Mac OS X and Windows!" A long time ago, that may have been the case (but then again, so was Windows 3.1) - and it can still be the case if you need to setup some Linux Distributions for a purpose that is different than what they were designed for, but CHAINSAWLINUX is the first Linux distribution designed for you, the movie-maker and editor, and your purpose: Editing movies. No more fighting with constant nasty installs, RPM problems, or compiling from source. You can shoot in video (including HDTV!) or shoot on film and have the lab transfer your film to video -then use one package - CHAINSAWLINUX to edit it digitally with Cinelerra or Cinepaint. With Cinelerra, you can edit at 24, 25, 30, or even 60 frames per second (that's right, 60fps). Your machine will need to be a beast, but at least you don't have to pay extra for the super-expensive software...

CHAINSAWLINUX comes with a whole slew of open source packages that can aid in editing video & film, burning CD's and DVD's, as well as other stuff too numerous to mention here. Below you will find just a few of the great programs included with CHAINSAWLINUX:

Cinelerra - an editing suite for Linux.

Cinepaint - a free open source painting and image retouching program. It is designed to work best with 35mm film and other high resolution high dynamic range images. The most popular open source tool in the motion picture industry, it has been used on such major motion pictures as: "2 Fast 2 Furious", "Scooby-Doo", "Harry Potter", "Stuart Little" and other feature films.

Blender - an open source software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback.

POV-Ray - The Persistence of Vision Raytracer is a high-quality, totally free tool for creating stunning three-dimensional graphics.

KDE - a powerful Free Software graphical desktop environment for Linux and Unix workstations. It combines ease of use, contemporary functionality, and outstanding graphical design with the technological superiority of the Unix operating system.

The GIMP - a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

Kino - a non-linear DV editor for GNU/Linux. It features excellent integration with IEEE-1394 for capture, VTR control, and recording back to the camera. Kino supports a number of formats: Raw DV, DV AVI, still frames, WAV, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, MPEG, DivX.

Want to know what else CHAINSAWLINUX has? Get it and see everything it has for yourself!

CHAINSAWLINUX is not a webserver, nor a mailserver. It is not a DHCP server, nor a name-server. Nor is it a router, a firewall, a ftp server, or a fileserver. It wasn't made to be any of the types of network servers or routers that are usually associated with many Linux distributions. But it is made to be an easy and fast user-interface for editing movies.

Because it is not a server, does not mean that CHAINSAWLINUX isn't network oriented, far from that! CHAINSAWLINUX is designed to talk easily between computers as long as it finds networking hardware that it can use - it should easily share files between Windows, Mac OS X, and other Linux distributions via Samba. More importantly, CHAINSAWLINUX's goal is to take advantage of multiple computers - linking them together to form a render farm that would make even the most hardcore of movie critics shed a tear.

Ok, we're not ashamed of plugging our feature in this section - because we've worked hard this past year to bring you something other than just a superfine OS/NLE suite - we've brought you action-packed excitement! The feature film (yes, shot on real 35mm film with some of the most beautiful lenses put in front of a camera) is fast, real fast. It's action-packed, dark-comedy at its finest.

With time running out, five convicts escape from prison only to find themselves in a violent standoff on a deserted farm. When two brothers and a jilted girlfriend threaten their chance to board a plane and reclaim their lives, the men learn that their fight for freedom is nothing compared to their fight for survival...

That's all for now...
